This is all around the internet, but in case you haven’t seen it ESXi DOES have a console. VMware doesn’t support it officially but it can be quite useful if you really need to get to your hands dirty for some reason.

Working in IT long enough you will have come up with a solution to manage your workload and justify your expense to the company. One of the most common methods of doing this is utilizing a help desk solution. A ticket system where users are assigned to queues queues and priorities and you can justify not working on the HRs printer issue because the phone system is causing problems for Sales. Over the years I’ve used several free and paid versions from Heat to Kayako to Sales force, etc. there are hundreds of solutions and back in the day I even created an MS Access DB version – what a pain!

In the fall of 2009 I attended a local VMware vSphere: Fast Track [V4] training. It was the longer 5 day class vs. the traditional 3 day. For the price difference it was worth the work – assuming your employer will allow the extra time away from the job as well. Tons more material and over 40 hands on labs you will use in real life. The ultimate goal was to become a VMware Certified Professional (VCP). The cost was $3,000 and one of the more difficult certifications to get simply due to the cost of attending the mandatory class before you can even sit for an exam.

If you’ve worked with Active Directory (AD) long enough you will eventually come up with a ton of exta objects that need to be cleaned up and managed. Thsi usually happens when you take over as a new administrator in an environment where the old one didn’t have time to do it or wasn’t on top of it. So how can you tell which accounts are no longer used or haven’t been used in a long time?

While integrating a new corporate subsidiary the technical handover of all systems and access permissions can become tricky. Some administrators will will go so far as to sabotage the integration by changing accounts, passwords, etc so that access can not be easily obtained – while others will simply forget credentials to certain systems or are separated from the company before integration is complete. In our instance working with a server that had Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 8 installed we noticed definitions not being updated. Since it is a corporate environment access to the console was password protected and that password was lost.

Scenario here is that you want to be a responsible system administrator and ensure that users don’t have privileges they really don’t need. It seems the kind folks at Intuit have never heard of security nor attempted to implement it in their code for a little application that you might have heard of – QuickBooks. In fact their insistence that users MUST be setup as a Power User or Administrator so that QuickBooks to run has led more than one IT manager to choose another application to run accounting. If you are a security freak responsible administrator and don’t have the option to use an application other than QuickBooks here are some settings that will keep your users in line. If you just try to execute QBs with a normal user you will see the familiar and misleading error -

If you ever need to backup, compress, relocate or even run simple queries against databases that are running under SSEE then you are aware of the frustrations of trying to interact with these DBs. This is particularly an issue with WSS and SharePoint databases that are installed without the foresite of expansion or maintenance by administrators.

Replicating a CRM environment for development and testing can be costly to create and keep updated. While researching this prospect for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 we ran across a not so well documented feature in the Deployment Manager application included with the install. If you are using the Enterprise version of CRM your license allows you to host multiple Organizations under the same infrastructure. If you are using standard look at the cost of upgrading to Enterprise, its usually substantially cheaper than adding the additional infrastructure and time to install a separate environment for development.
